January 31, 2008:  Beheading Barney

Long and promised, here it is. Remember that there were no lockwashers, no copper sealing washer, and no acorn nut!

These were really on tight. Only hammering 14mm socket with the impact wrench could loosen these nuts.

Looked like this.

Notice all thick flat washers! Is this normal for an S90 or CT90?

If it isn't, I strangely have another S90 (Bessie) with the same configuration? Did the same mechanic work on the two motorcycles?
They were in adjacent states:)

Just the lowly head cover.

A first look at the rockers.

Just checking the condition of the rocker shafts. They seem OK.

Now the combustion chamber.

Is the build up of sandy kind of stuff normal? Can/should it be cleaned off? If so, what is the best way to clean it?

Copper head gasket seems whole. Can it be "annealed"?

Lots of cleaning to do around the mating surfaces and head.

Rocker and cam shaft end cover. More cleaning.

Should this (and other) gaskets be trimmed to expose the channels? Then the channel(S) would be all metal instead of half metal, half gasket?

Behind the cam sprocket in the head. That hole on top goes to the rocker camshaft area. So this is a way that oil can escape to the chain and back to the crankcase. Also on the bearing.

Here we have Mt. Fuji :-) The piston at TDC, also same deposits as combustion chamber? Lead, oil?

Remember the goop oozing between the head and cylinder in the http://lostabout.com/s90/oct_14.asp?b=engine#start page.
Well we find some of it here on the upper chain gasket!

This is what was left of the stud gasket.

Here is the piston at BDC. The cylinder wall is very smooth to the touch.

A shot from below at the cylinder wall.

Here is the channel to the stud where oil heads for the camshaft rockers and valves.

Here is a piston side view. Seems some of that build up goes all the way down to the oil scraper ring? Should it be cleaned?
Marvel Mystery Oil maybe, somehow? I will be asking in the group(s).

Remember that I did get 150 PSI on the compression tester with this! So will cleaning improve things a little? I hope so.

So finally Barney sort of back together with the first items to go! Lots more gaskets and cleaning.

The temperature was 52 today, it has been generally 39 to 41 in the garage, which was too cold. So now I can get to work...
