I finally got the clutch outer cover off! The stripped screw was difficult to
loosen, but I supported the clutch housing against the case (above the oil
pump) with a socket. And the opposite side I supported with a small wrench
wedged between the clutch case and the primary driven gear. This held the
crankshaft(?) slightly to the right. Now with an improvised clutch holding
fork tool, and a couple of hits on the ol' impact wrench, the stripped 5x12
screw came loose! And look what was behind the outer cover!

I put 3 Qtips into the crankshaft to keep the goop from getting in, but
perhaps in the past some got in? Note the wall of goop, or is it congealed
graphite lube(?) on the wall under the outer cover! I pried some away with
a toothpick in the 2 o'clock position. It is about an eighth of an inch thick!
So what is it, and is it normal? I think not, but I need advice here! Has this
engine been messed with or is this normal for a "farm bike"?
Anyway, here is another shot with the outer cover on the side.

And now after cleaning all the grease or petrified oil or whatever it was.

I still have to remove some old gasket material around the ears of the cover
and clean the surface and apply a new gasket. Hope that is part of the full
gasket kit I eBay'd from Caspermtnmoto?
Any advice on the wall of grey goop would be appreciated. Does it signify
trouble? Is it normal? You can email me directly by clicking on the emblem or
